LES ZONES MORTES PRENNENT DE L’AMPLEUR DANS LES OCEANS

Section 1.

This reading strategy is one that I use with my senior students to get them reading. I usually begin by getting them to read the piece, and try to find the words in the text. It is an exercise that they really enjoy, as the answers are right in front of them, but they are not always obvious. Once they have found the words, they then read the paragraph aloud, which allows them to perfect their accents. One student reads the paragraph while another translates. This exercise is great as a pair work exercise or even group work, depending on the size of your class. This 2 section extract on ocean pollution is taken from a reading which is divided into 4 sections. The students are given the sheet, and the first pair or group to finish successfully is “L’équipe gagnante”. You would be surprised how competitive they get!
As a follow up exercise, I then give them a few minutes to brainstorm the piece, and put together a list of vocabulary surrounding the theme of Environment. You could also ask the students to put together a couple of sentences on this theme.
