How to Prepare For The French Oral Exam

How to Prepare For The French Oral Exam

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE FRENCH ORAL… 7 key points

1. How to Prepare For The French Oral Exam, Speak as much as possible. The more immersive you become in your language learning, the better you will perform, try the following…

  • Prepare for the French Oral Exam by Practising French speaking, with a classmate or even record yourself on your phone.
  • A lot of students change their phone settings to French so that they are thinking about French at different times of the day.

2. Watch as many Netflix shows as possible through French. If you want to have subtitles on, keep the subtitles in English, but remember to have the audio solely in French. Click on to the news in French every morning, even for a minute or two. TF1 or Radio NRJ are both great!

3. How to Prepare For The French Oral Exam…

  • Make the French Oral Exam work part of your daily study routine.
  • 5 minutes of French from now to the oral will amount to a huge amount of French!

4. You choose to be the master of your oral exam. If an examiner asks you a question about school for example, realise that this is a golden opportunity to talk about something that you have prepared. So if the examiner asks you about les règles de l’école (school rules) or about l’uniforme scolaire, (school uniform) you can answer the question and then lead on to something else for example what you would do if you were the principal of the school or fashion.

5. Be aware of the tenses that the questions are asked in, and remember that you must answer in the tense asked. When the examiner asks you a question in the French Oral Exam , they will use the ‘vous’ form, but you must know the verb in the ‘je’ form

For Example…

  • Qu’est-ce que vous faites le weekend?
  • What do you do at the weekend?

Answer by Using…

  • Je fais mes devoirs (I do my homework) or Je sors avec mes amis (I go out with my friends).

6. Take advantage of the ‘document’ option, as this will allow you to showcase advanced French. (I will be sharing another blog entry on the document option of the exam).

7. Remember that you must practice asking as well as answering questions. The following are commonly asked question words:

  • Qui – Who ?
  • Quand – When?
  • Où – Where?
  • Pourquoi – why?
  • Comment – How?
  • Quel/Quelle/Quels/Quelles ? – What or which?
  • Combien – How much/How many?
  • D’où – From where?
  • À quelle heure – What time?
